Located about 112 kilometers southwest of Adelaide, Kangaroo Island is the third-largest island in Australia, covering over 4,405 km². Known as “Karta Pintingga” by the Kaurna people, meaning Island of the Dead, it holds deep ancestral and mythological significance.
European explorer Matthew Flinders landed here in 1802, naming it after the abundance of kangaroos. Over the centuries, it has been a place of sealers, settlers, and ecological guardianship. Today, it is revered as a sanctuary for native wildlife, untouched coastlines, and geological wonder.
The island is an ecological mosaic—featuring rugged cliffs, white sand beaches, bushlands, limestone caves, and protected marine zones. Its isolation preserved a biodiversity that makes it a living archive of Australia’s natural history.
