Located on Whitsunday Island off the central coast of Queensland, Whitehaven Beach stretches over seven kilometers along the Coral Sea. It is most famous for its pure silica sand—98% quartz—giving it an ethereal white hue that doesn’t retain heat underfoot.
This beach lies within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and is part of the traditional land of the Ngaro people, one of the earliest recorded Aboriginal groups on the east coast of Australia.
Beyond its postcard-perfect image, Whitehaven has long been a place of navigation, both spiritual and maritime. The Hill Inlet to the north, where tides swirl sand and sea into painterly patterns, is considered sacred geography—a living canvas of the reef’s breath.
